LA BERG, a 5th generation farm, was established in 2008 and is owned and managed by Hanno Joubert.  His experience in the Thoroughbred industry is represented in the establishment of LA BERG.

Hanno started his equine career in the Thoroughbred industry in 1996 working part time at Klawervlei stud.  In 1997 he traveled to Ireland and worked for Tommy Stack at a racing yard and prepared yearlings for sales.  He then traveled to the US in 1998 to work at Considine Farm doing quarantine and stud work.  At Questroyal Stud in New York he gained experience in breeding, yearling sales and stallion management.  At the end of 1999 he was temporarily employed by the International Racehorse Transport (IRT) and looked after shuttle stallions traveling from USA to Australia and New Zeeland.  He then moved to Australia, working at Vinery Stud in 1999, working with mares and foals during the breeding season, preparing yearlings for sales and also worked with the shuttle stallions.  He joined the IRT in 2001 as quarantine manager in the UK.  In 2009 Hanno was responsible for the stallion Jay Peg to be brought from Singapore to South Africa for Klawervlei Stud.

He is an experienced horse and stallion man and has also logged many hours as a pro-groom.  His knowledge and love for the Thoroughbred horse is visible in his dedication to those in his care.  Today he is a mare owner and has also bred horses that are currently seen on the racing track.

The place which the horses of LA BERG call home is a lush green 1000 hectares farm situated at the foot of the magnificent Langeberg mountain range, in the picturesque Breederivervalley.  The farm is located in the heart of the Thoroughbred industry of the Western Cape, only 10 km from Klawervlei Stud, home of Captain Al, where some of the best sires in South Africa are at stud.  The farm is easily accessible with 50 km drive from the town, Robertson.

The farm boasts spectacular indigenous plants and excellent grazing.  The fertile, lime rich, BAR valley has proven to produce world class race horses for many years.  The numerous fountains in the Langeberg mountain range ensure that there is always an abundance of water flowing through the farm.

The farm offers boarding of all Thoroughbred horses – broodmares, weanlings, yearlings, etc.  During the sales preparation of the yearlings they are housed in a barn arranged stable complex.  Each stable of the 15 stables within the complex is also fitted with infrared heating lamps.  The stable complex is located close to the daily turn out paddocks and also the lungeing circle to ensure proper training facilities for the yearlings at LA BERG.  A dedicated team of full time personnel see to the exercising, grooming and well-being of the horses.

Hanno Joubert is involved in the day to day running of the farm.  The grooms are well trained and committed, all sharing the farm’s ideal of preparing high quality individual yearlings.

The stable complex also includes a medical facility where all the seasonal reproductive work on the broodmares is done by experienced equine veterinarians from Drakenstein Veterinary Clinic (DVC).  All mares that need to be covered are transported by LA BERG to the required individual stallions at any Thoroughbred stud farm in the Western Cape for covering.

Broodmares, mares with foals at foot, maiden and barren mares and weanlings are kept in large grassy pastures all year round.  Broodmares are grouped according to their foaling dates and monitored throughout their pregnancies.

The broodmares on the farm foal down individually in lush green foaling paddocks but can also be foaled down in large foaling stables.  LA BERG makes use of a night watch that notifies the management immediately when a mare is in the first stage of labour.  Thus all foalings are carefully monitored, assisted when needed and all prenatal care is done by the management at LA BERG.

LA BERG specializes in the following:

  • BOARDING of mares, foals, weanlings, yearlings and spelling
